Well, ok, maybe there is a wrinkle or two. We don't usually know what our opponent's cards are, but in this case we do. This means that there are 8 known cards and 52-8= 44 unknown cards. So if the number of outs is N, N cards will win for Hero, and 44-N cards will lose. So the odds are (44-N):N or (44-N)/N:1.

Example: Hero has a flush draw but is behind to villain's 2-pair. We count 9 outs, so the odds are (44-9):9, which is 35:9, or about 3.9:1.

Sometimes, our hero will have some outs to tie. That is, if certain cards come on the river, Hero and Villain will have the same hand and split the pot. In this case we count the tie outs as 1/2 of an out to win.

Example: Four cards will win for Hero, and 3 will tie. His total odds are (44-(4+3/2)):(4+3/2), or 39.5:5.5, i.e. roughly 7.2:1.
